The family handcart at Martin's Cove

We stopped by Martin's Cove on our way back from Oregon. We pulled the handcart 2 miles to the trail head, then went up to the cove, and then pulled it back. It was a really humbling experience to be there, knowing what went on there and how many lost their lives trying to reach Zion. We definitely need to do this as a family sometime.

Are those wagons replicas of pioneer ones? And did you have all three kids riding in it?

They are the same dimensions as the originals. We had all three in there and I even pulled Kim and the boys for a mile or so. All the boys actually fell asleep on the first 2 mile pull up to the cove. You can't drive up to the cove, you have to either hike or pull a cart, which they encourage, up to the base of the cove and then it's about a quarter mile hike up to the spot where they stayed. It was hard to imagine those saints doing it in subzero temperatures and doing it all day over rough terrain. It was really neat to be there. If you want a good read on it, "Fire of the Covenant" by Lund is written in similar style to the "Work and the Glory" style with fictional characters in documented situations. It's pretty heart wrenching but a good read to get an idea of what happened to the Willie and Martin companies.

I don't know if you all know this, but we have a 3rd great grandfather, Pierre Chatelaine, who was a member of the Martin Handcart Company and survived to see the Salt Lake Valley.
